Gora (1910) is Tagore's fifth novel and is generally considered his masterpiece. With its epic dimensions and the broad canvas of the social, cultural, religious and political life of the nineteenth century urban middle class Bengal, it was a landmark in the history of the Bengali novel.

A masterpiece of Tagore, a great spirit of India. Through the conflict between orthodox Hinduism and Brahmo Samaj, this books shows us what the true faith is, and what the true religion is.About translation. Since I can't read Indian language, I don't know how well this translation preserves the beauty of the original. But one is clear, that this translation is readable.
One thing that this books lacks: this book provides no annotations at all. Expressions like "param brahmani jojitachittah" appear. The author may have preserved the original text so that its delicate meaning would not be distorted, but this makes some sentences not understandable...

Gora (Audible Audio Edition) Rabindranath Tagore Samrat Chakrabarti Audible Studios Books Reviews
I bought this book while traveling in India years ago and never got around to reading it till we picked it as our book for the month in my book club. I had expected, this being Tagore, that this would be a largely inaccessible book that I wouldn't be able to follow, but I was pleasantly surprised. At the heart of this book is how people's nationalistic and religious views are formed, shaped, and re-shaped, using the central character of Gora, a staunch Hindu nationalist from a Brahmin family (he does not know, but we as the readers do, that he was actually adopted when his mother, a white woman, died in labor after the Mutiny), a Brahmo family, and an assortment of characters that struggle with what it means to be Indian (in per-independent India), to be Hindu and Brahmo, and the idea of change within society. It's gorgeously written, and I thought it was a fine introduction to Tagore for me (not knowing any better as yet).
Although the title is very old, the values it teaches are still applicable today. Translation has preserved the Indian cultural background. Excellent story which shows how social barriers can be overcome by maturity, love and tolerance.
Beautiful book, brings out working of human mind when confronted with reality that we are not prepared for. Must read, its worth it!
A profound study of conflict of cultures between the east and the west . It is a modern classic a must read for all times.
I had heard of Tagore over the years but had no real idea what a great human being he was.
The Indian references were difficult for me but I really got the idea that he understands the human condition, the politics, freedom, hope, love, family and the rest of it.
I wish we had one of these people around today.
